No Fonte Grande de Alte, the quality and abundance of its water have allowed, over the centuries, the functioning of watermills along the riverbank, fundamental to the local economy.
Furthermore, the Fonte Grande is integrated into a small natural amphitheatre, where traditionally take place cultural events, concerts and popular celebrations, especially during the summer. This setting between running water, vegetation, and white houses creates one of the most emblematic scenes of Algarve Serrano, making the place not just a historical point, but also a living space for culture and socialising.
The surrounding space was transformed into a pleasant Leisure area, with grassy areas, natural shade and a clear stream where it's possible to cool off in the summer. The fountain features simple, traditional architecture, integrated into the landscape, maintaining the authentic character of the village.
Besides its practical importance in the past, Fonte Grande is today a Meeting and social gathering point, a venue for local parties and events. Surrounded by the nature of the mountains, it represents the strong connection between Water, community and tradition in the Algarve interior.
